Introducing organization-activated connections

Config showing org-activated connections screen

We recently launched organization-activated connections. This update simplifies the process for you and your team to create and manage connections on behalf of your customers when configuring an integration instance.

Specifically, these changes ensure that:

  1. You can define connections on behalf of your customers.
  2. Customers won't need to enter credentials during instance setup.
  3. You can manage each customer's unique credentials via the UI or programmatically.

And we'll keep working to improve the connection experience for you and your customers. This is the next step in our journey as we provide a best-in-class experience for integration builders and end users.

Best practices for using templates and organization-activated connections in Prismatic

Templates and connections best practices banner

Prismatic offers integration templates to enhance security and increase developer efficiency. Templates help teams quickly build and scale integrations, allowing for faster delivery times. In addition, connection templates and the recently announced organization-activated connections allow teams to build integrations with pre-filled connection input fields and customer-specific values that can be used across multiple customer instances.

Prismatic's Customer Success team has shared dozens of integration templates that offer pre-built workflows that streamline integration development and provide tried-and-true integration frameworks from which your team can build. These templates incorporate best practices, address common use cases, and outline standard workflows, enabling users to quickly set up integrations without starting from scratch.

Key features of integration templates

  • Standardization: Using templates helps organizations maintain consistency across integrations, making maintenance and updates easier.
  • Speed of Deployment: Templates reduce the time required to develop new integrations, allowing teams to respond to business needs by "quickstarting" the integration design process with proven, established patterns.
  • User-Friendly: Templates are designed to be user-friendly, requiring less technical knowledge. This enables more team members to participate in the integration design and maintenance process while coming "up to speed" on the Prismatic platform.

Connection templates allow users to pre-fill a connection's input fields with default values, simplifying the process of connecting multiple customers to external services. A template can be referenced by an integration you build or by an integration your customers build using the embedded designer. These templates include authentication details, endpoint configurations, and any necessary setup for third-party systems.

Using connection templates streamlines integration setup, reduces errors, and makes managing multiple connections to the same service across different customers easier, saving time in the deployment and maintenance of integrations.

Key features of connection templates

  • If several integrations require the same connection input fields (for example, an OAuth 2.0 client ID and secret), you can create a template containing those fields and reference it in each integration.
  • If you want to provide a template for your customers to use in their own integrations, you can create and share a template with them. They can then reference the template in their own integrations but will not be able to view or change the template's input fields (so they can't access your client secret). If you store your integrations' YAML definitions in source control, your YAML will be cleaner if you reference a template instead of directly including the connection's input fields in the YAML. You can avoid committing sensitive information to source control by referencing a template containing a client ID and client secret.

Leveraging organization-activated connections

In Prismatic, org-activated connections enable organizations to pre-configure and activate connections to third-party services for their customers. This setup allows customers to use these connections without inputting their credentials after the organization establishes the connection.

These connections simplify the integration setup for customers by removing the need for repeated configuration of the same service. They enhance security by centrally managing credentials and ensuring consistency across multiple customer integrations.
